The government falls in France

This Wednesday, the government of the Prime Minister of France, Michel Barnier, was overthrown.

331 MPs voted in favor of the motion of no confidence presented by the New Popular Front against the government.

This number exceeds the absolute majority which is 288, reports " Le Monde ". As a result, the social insurance financing bill for 2025 was also rejected.

The prime minister will now submit his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron.

In a last-ditch effort to save his government, Prime Minister Barnier called on lawmakers to act "responsibly" and think about "the country's interest."

The Barnier government is the second to fall, after that of Georges Pompidou in 1962.

Prime Minister Barnier, a conservative politician, was appointed to the post in September. He is the shortest-lived prime minister in the history of modern France.

President Macron must appoint a new prime minister, but the composition of the divided parliament does not change. Meanwhile, parliamentary elections cannot be held until at least July, creating a potential deadlock for policymakers.
