French lawmakers are expected to vote for the overthrow of the Government

French lawmakers will vote Wednesday on a motion of no confidence against the government, which is expected to pass and plunge the eurozone's second-largest economy deeper into political crisis.

If no surprise happens in the last moments, the Government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier will become the first to be dismissed through a vote of confidence in the last 60 years.

In a televised interview on Tuesday, Barnier said he still believes his government can survive the confidence vote, which is expected to be voted on in the evening after a debate starting at 4pm.

But the far-right party, Tubimi Kombëtar (RN), has made it clear on Wednesday morning that it will vote together with the leftist parties to overthrow the Government.

Leftists and rightists together have enough votes to topple the Government.

Asked if the National Rally will support the vote of confidence, lawmaker Laure Lavalette told TF1 TV: "Without a doubt, yes."

Asked about the catastrophic consequences that Barnier and his ministers have warned of, Lavalette said: "There is no reason for this to lead to great chaos. Everything will not collapse."

The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleu, told CNews: "Nothing is finished until the vote, but we can see that we are heading towards the overthrow [of the Government]".

President Emmanuel Macron could ask Barnier to stay on as acting prime minister until he finds a new prime minister, which could happen as early as next year.

The political crisis could hurt businesses, consumers and taxpayers, experts and economists told Reuters./REL
