Turkey's plastic recycling industry has been heavily criticized in a Human Rights Watch report published on September 21. The report highlights health problems for workers and residents, and criticizes the European Union, for which Turkey is the main recycler of plastics.
Turkey's rapidly expanding recycling industry, processing nearly half a million tons of plastic a year, is accused in a Human Rights Watch report of threatening the lives of workers, many of whom are among the most vulnerable groups. vulnerable members of Turkish society.
“Since 2018, when the Chinese government banned the import of plastic waste, approximately 450,000 tons of plastic waste from the EU have been sent to Turkey every year. We have raised the issue with decision makers in the EU to push them to have stronger rules to respect people's rights in countries affected by European exports of plastic waste," says Krista Shennum of Human Rights Watch. / VOA
Plastic recycling is a central part of environmental initiatives for a greener world.
According to Human Rights Watch, the most vulnerable people in Turkey are paying the price for this aspiration.
