Borrell: We are not intimidated by Putin's threats

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borell said at a press conference that Putin's announcement - on the partial mobilization of reservists who have served in the army and have "relevant experience" such as the threat to annex parts of Ukrainian territory and about using nuclear weapons to defend Russia - shows panic and desperation.

Continued support for Ukraine

Borrell told reporters that EU foreign ministers, who are attending the UN General Assembly in New York, will discuss the threat and reiterate continued support for Ukraine.

Likewise, the head of the EU's foreign policy said that we "will warn the international community about the unacceptable situation in which Putin is putting us all".

Borrell added that EU foreign ministers will discuss continued military support for Ukraine and possible further sanctions against Russia.

"It is clear that Russia wants to destroy Ukraine," Borrell said. "We will not be intimidated."

The EU's foreign policy chief said the EU is supporting Ukraine, but that the EU "is not participating in the war itself, we are not aggressive". Borrell also clarified that he has no plans to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is also in New York this week for the UN General Assembly./DW
