US-Iran deal/ JD Vance: Trump could release it before Friday

Donald Trump may decide to release a preliminary agreement to end the war with Iran before Friday, US Vice President JD Vance said, after the US president said the deal had already been signed.

Vance has described the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the US and Iran as "about a page and a half" and a "very general" document.

Senior US officials have also begun to provide some details about the agreement, informing that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen on Friday - the same day the agreement is officially signed in Geneva.

This comes as Trump attends the G7 summit in France, which will host a special session on Iran on Tuesday, attended by the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

On Monday, during talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump said "I'm very happy to say it's signed, the deal is completely signed," referring to the preliminary agreement.

US officials said it was signed electronically by Trump, Vance and the speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Technical talks on Iran's nuclear program are expected to begin this week, officials said, while any sanctions relief or asset release would depend on Iran fulfilling its commitments under the deal.

While Trump had previously suggested that details of the deal would be released "very soon" after Friday's ceremony, Vance told Fox News that the US president may decide to release the deal with Tehran before then.

Vance said the memorandum of understanding (MOU) was a very general document, adding that many of the details would be worked out during future negotiations.

"On a number of issues, we will have to resolve these things during the technical negotiation phase, but what the Memorandum of Understanding does is create a framework whereby the Iranians benefit from the agreement by fulfilling their obligations under the agreement," he said.

The document's "first paragraph" describes Iran as committed to "regional peace and stability," Vance said, which, he added, includes stopping the financing of "terrorist organizations."

"Most importantly, they will have a verifiable commitment not to build a nuclear weapon," Vance said.

G7 allies will be keen to discuss Iran with Trump, with the UK and France leading plans for a defensive mission to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said he did not believe the US would "need a lot of help" in ensuring free passage of ships, but added that he did not think it was "a bad idea to have one or two ships" from other countries stationed in the strategic waterway.
