Antonio Guterres: The world is in great danger

The world is in "great danger and paralyzed" warned the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres at the opening of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

After lifting restrictions on the presence of member country delegations imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic over the previous two years, more than 150 heads of state and government were present at the annual meeting in New York. 

The world divided by multiple crises

The UN's largest annual gathering takes place at a time when the world is torn apart by multiple crises, most notably the war in Ukraine.

"Besimi po shkërmoqet, pabarazitë po shpërthejnë, planeti ynë po digjet. Njerëzit po lëndohen dhe më të pambrojturit po vuajnë më tepër", tha ai.

Shefi i OKB-sëtha se megjithatë ka shpresë. Duke theksuar se bashkëpunimi dhe dialogu janë e vetmja rrugë përpara, ai paralajmëroi se "asnjë fuqi apo grup nuk mund ta ketë i vetëm fjalën".

"Le të punojmë si një, si një koalicion botëror, si kombe të bashkuara," u kërkoi ai udhëheqësve të mbledhur në sallën e madhe të Asamblesë së Përgjithshme.

The UN made a special exception for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was allowed to pre-record his speech due to "continuing foreign occupation" and military actions that require him to carry out "his duties to protect and national security".
