A person is believed to die of hunger every four seconds, more than 200 non-governmental organizations warned on Tuesday, calling for decisions around the world "to end the spiral of the global hunger crisis".

In an open letter addressed to world leaders gathering in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, 238 organizations from 75 countries, including Oxfam, Save the Children and Plan International, expressed outrage at the high levels of of hunger in the world.

“Rreth 345 milionë njerëz janë duke u përballur me uri të rëndë, shifrat janë rritur më shumë se dyfish prej vitit 2019”, kanë thënë organizatat përmes një deklarate.

“Pavarësisht premtimeve nga liderët botërorë se nuk do të lejojnë më kurrë uri në shekullin XXI, kriza e urisë është ende prezente në Somali. Rreth botës, 50 milionë njerëz janë në prag të urisë në 45 shtete”, kanë thënë ato.

Duke përmendur se rreth 19.700 njerëz vlerësohet se vdesin çdo ditë si pasojë e urisë, organizatat joqeveritare kanë thënë se kjo shifër nënkupton se një person vdes çdo katër sekonda.

“Është turp që me gjithë këtë teknologji në bujqësi, dhe teknika tjera, sot po flasim për uri në shekullin 21”, ka thënë Mohanna Ahmed Ali Eljabaly, nga njëra prej organizatave që kanë nënshkruar deklaratën.

"It's not just about one country, or one continent, and hunger has never been the only reason. This situation speaks of the injustice of all humanity", he said.

Among the countries most facing hunger are: Somalia, Haiti, Djibouti, Kenya, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Madagascar and Burkina Faso./REL
