Authorities in Cyprus rescued hundreds of migrants on Monday evening and in the early hours of Tuesday. The migrants had left Lebanon and were stranded at sea in two separate incidents, officials said.
Authorities used air and watercraft to rescue migrants about 203 kilometers west of the island on Monday after reports that a boat with more than 300 people on board was in trouble.
Commercial ships were also mobilized to transfer the migrants, the Cyprus Joint Rescue Center said in a media release.
A few hours later, another ship reported being in trouble south of Cyprus. There were 177 people on board.
" Water was starting to seep into the ship and they called for help ," said the deputy commander of the Joint Rescue Center, Andreas Zacharia.
He said that all the migrants have been sent ashore.
The authorities did not say what nationality the migrants have.
However, Lebanon, from where the ships that were transporting the migrants started, has become the starting point of the journey of many migrants who intend to reach Europe./ REL
