Iran's president wants to revive the nuclear deal

Iran's president said his country is serious about reviving the nuclear deal with Western powers, but questioned whether Tehran could trust America's commitment to any potential deal.

In 2018, former US President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the 2015 deal Tehran reached with nuclear powers.

This agreement was aimed at curbing the Islamic Republic's nuclear program in exchange for economic sanctions.

Since Washington withdrew from the agreement, Tehran has begun to violate the limits imposed on uranium enrichment.

During the speech before the General Assembly of the United Nations, the president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, said that the talks on the revival of the agreement are at a critical moment.

"Our only wish is: compliance with the commitment", said Raisi, as he pointed out that the US was the one that withdrew from the agreement.

He asked if Iran "can really believe, without being given guarantees" that the US this time will respect its commitments.

European Union officials, who are brokering the talks, said the window to reach a deal is closing.

Since Joe Biden has taken the post of US president, hopes have increased for the revival of the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers./ REL
