Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered an increase in the number of troops in the country's army, apparently in an effort to replenish troops that have suffered heavy losses in six months of bloody war and to prepare for a long and harsh in Ukraine.

The number of troops is increasing by 137,000 or 13%, bringing the total to 1.15 million by the end of the year.

Some Russian military analysts predict greater reliance on those who join the military voluntarily because of Kremlin concerns about a possible domestic backlash if the conscription order is extended.

The move brings Russia's armed forces to 2.04 million, including 1.15 million troops.

Western estimates of Russians killed in the Ukraine war range from more than 15,000 to over 20,000 - more than the Soviet Union lost during the 0-year war in Afghanistan. The Pentagon said last week that about 80,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded, eroding Moscow's ability to launch major offensives.
