Ukraine: 15 people were killed by Russian attacks on a train station

Russian forces on Wednesday fired rockets at a train station in central Ukraine, killing at least 15 people and wounding more than 50 others, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

The attack took place in Chapline, a town with about 3,500 inhabitants in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Zelensky was quoted as saying in a video address.

Ukraine's president's office said an 11-year-old child was killed in another rocket attack in another part of the same region.

The Russian attacks come on the day Ukraine is marking its 31st anniversary of independence. This day also coincides with the six-month anniversary of the start of the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine.

" Rescue teams are working. But, unfortunately, the number of victims may increase ," Zelensky said during a video address to the United Nations Security Council.

The Council met today to discuss the war in Ukraine.

"This is how we live every day. This is how Russia prepares for the UN Security Council meeting, " Zelensky added.

Ukraine has banned mass gatherings for Independence Day, fearing airstrikes.

Earlier on August 24, Zelensky vowed that his country will fight against Russian troops "to the end"./ VOA
