As Ukrainians mark Independence Day, the country's President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a new warning about possible Russian attacks.

In his usual late-night speech, he said Ukraine was celebrating "flag day" as it "fights against the most terrifying threat to statehood," the BBC writes.

He urged people to follow security rules in cities such as Kiev and Kharkiv, including curfews and air raid sirens.

"Today is an important day for all of us. And that's why this day, unfortunately, is also important for our enemy," he said.

"We must be aware that today ugly Russian provocations and brutal attacks are possible. The Armed Forces of Ukraine, our intelligence, special services will do everything to protect people - as much as possible. And we will surely respond to every manifestation of Russian terror", said the president of Ukraine.

Zelensky also outlined some of the activities planned to mark the national holiday, including awards for people "from all walks of life" who have helped the war effort./euronews
