Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Thursday to increase the number of Russian armed forces to 2,390,758 from the current 1,902,000

According to the decree signed on August 25, the number of military personnel will increase from 1,013,628 to 1,150,628 effective.

The decree also mentions personnel who will be hired from the ranks of civilians on behalf of the Russian armed forces. The decree will enter into force on January 1, 2023.

The decree comes seven months after the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and amid unconfirmed reports of significant losses suffered by Russian armed forces during the conflict.

On May 29, President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing people over 40 to enlist in the armed forces. Previously, the Russian army had age limits for the recruitment of soldiers from 18 to 40 years.

Ukrainian and Western military experts say that Russia has suffered heavy losses in the ongoing war in Ukraine. Although the Russian leader has not accepted and has always denied the published figures regarding the losses of the Russian army during this period, his movements show the opposite./ REL
