The pro-Western president of Moldova wants another presidential term

Maia Sandu, the pro-Western president of Moldova, announced that she will also run for a presidential term in next year's elections.

Sandu also called on the Parliament to organize a referendum on the possible admission of her state to the European Union.

"Our future is in the European family and it is necessary to say clearly - the whole country - which path we choose for Moldova," she said in a video published on Facebook on December 24.

"I call on the Parliament to initiate the holding of a referendum next autumn, in which the voice of the citizens will be decisive", she added.

During a summit in Brussels, the EU announced on December 14 the decision to open membership negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine and granted candidate country status to Georgia.

At that summit, Sandu invited citizens to a pro-European rally in Chisinau on December 17, to celebrate what she described as a "historic step forward for the destiny of our country."

The pro-Western Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean, said that Moldova "is European" and that the future of the state "is in the EU".

On December 14, Sandu praised Parliament for approving the national defense strategy, which links her country to the West, saying "this is a step towards strengthening the security and stability of our country".

Through the video published on December 24, Sandu called on citizens to support him for another presidential term in the elections expected to be held in November 2024.

It is unclear whether Sandu is asking for the EU membership referendum to be held together with the presidential election.

This will be the third time that Sandu is running for president. She was defeated by pro-Russian politician Igor Dodon in 2016, but defeated him in the 2020 elections./ REL
