The Chem Pluto tanker that the Pentagon says was attacked by Iran in the Indian Ocean.

A drone launched by Iran struck a chemical tanker in the Indian Ocean on Saturday morning, the US Department of Defense said.

"The Liberian-flagged, Japanese-owned and Dutch-operated motor ship CHEM PLUTO was hit at around 10:00 a.m. local time in the Indian Ocean, 200 nautical miles off the coast of India, by a drone strike. carried out by Iran," a Pentagon spokesman told Reuters.

The incident highlights escalating regional tensions and a new threat to sea lanes after the October 7 attack by Hamas - the Palestinian group designated as a terrorist organization by the US - on Israel, which prompted the war.

The Iranian government, but also its allied militant forces in Yemen, have publicly criticized Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip. As a result of the initial attack by Hamas, 1,200 people were killed in Israel, while over 20,000 Palestinians were killed in the fighting in Gaza.

No casualties were reported as a result of the drone attack and the fire caused in the tank was extinguished immediately.
