The General Secretary of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, is of the opinion that Russia, despite the great military effort, can no longer achieve its goals of the war in Ukraine. According to Stoltenberg, the purpose of Putin's invasion of Ukraine was to prevent Ukraine from moving towards NATO and the European Union, he said in an interview for the German news agency, DPA. But after two years of war, Ukraine is closer to NATO and the EU than ever before.

Stoltenberg speaks of strategic failure

Referring to the Russian position, which has always seen Ukraine as part of Russia's strategic influence, Stoltenberg said that "President Putin has lost Ukraine forever". This is a major strategic failure for Russia. He expressed his confidence that Ukraine will one day achieve its goal of becoming a member of NATO.

The Secretary General of NATO has also referred to the high price that Russia has paid for this war. This country has lost hundreds of fighter planes and thousands of tanks, 300,000 soldiers have been killed or wounded in the war. According to the US secret services, 315,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the war in Ukraine. (Source: ZDF 14.12.2023 note ed.) Likewise, as a result of the war, inflation has increased and the standard of living has decreased. On the other hand, politically Russia is more isolated than ever before.

Putin will conquer other areas

At the same time, the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, warned of developments that require a quick end to the war and who believe that Putin will change course after the re-election on March 17. "We have no sign that Putin will change his objectives and policy," Stoltenberg said. "He will try to conquer other territories."/ DW
