President Trump in meeting with Republican lawmakers/ Objective, strong border

President Donald Trump welcomed Republican lawmakers on Monday with a speech summarizing his first week in office and urged them to support his crackdown on illegal immigration and border security proposals.

"We are not apologizing and we are moving very quickly," President Trump said.

"I really focus on the border more than anything else," he said, downplaying inflation, an issue that supported his candidacy last year but over which he has less control as president.

Speaking at the annual policy meeting of Republican lawmakers, President Trump made his political ambitions clear while urging lawmakers to support his conservative agenda.

"We are creating a new political majority that is destroying and replacing Franklin Roosevelt's 'New Deal' coalition, which dominated American politics for more than 100 years," he said.

The conference is being held at Trump National Doral Miami, a swanky resort with four golf courses owned by the billionaire president. Although Republicans are euphoric about electoral victories that have given them complete control in Washington, they will also face tough negotiations in the coming weeks and months.

They need to find consensus on a budget spending bill before the March 14 deadline, when funding for the federal government expires.

In addition, Republicans are working on a budget plan that would set the framework for their broader plans, including tax cuts, fossil fuel development and border security.
