German President: Let's not lose faith

"I don't see news anymore! Never before have I heard this sentence so often as this year", with these words, the German president opens his traditional Christmas speech, thus addressing precisely the sense of powerlessness created in citizens due to developments in the global arena: "This year the world has really shown its dark side. We are looking at scenes of suffering and destruction, scenes of hatred and violence. The war of Russian aggression against Ukraine is entering its second winter. And since the fall, we have been watching with horror the atrocities of Hamas and the victims of the war in the Middle East."

Further, Steinmeier shows understanding for the uncertainty and skepticism created towards politics in these times: "This year has left many unresolved issues even here in our country. Some view the government and politicians with skepticism. Some are worried about the future. We all want a more peaceful world. I want it too. And I believe that we should never abandon this desire."

"Christmas as a time of peace and reflection"

Steinmeier further emphasizes the importance of Christmas as a time when people can "remove stress for a while". He wishes his compatriots to use the holidays to relax and regenerate the forces that will be needed. to face these challenges.

German President: Let's not lose faith

He recalls the importance of democracy and calls on citizens to participate actively: "Yes, we want clarity. Yes, it is right to expect those who have political responsibility to fight for the right path, but also to give answers that will help us as a country". But Steinmeier encouraged constructive cooperation and overcoming divisions in society: "Some leave, others complain about everything and everyone. But in a democracy, when the going gets tough, there are better counselors than anger and contempt, better counselors than those who pretend there is always a simple answer to the questions of the future.”

German democracy celebrates its 75th anniversary

The Federal President also expresses his gratitude to those who work during the Christmas holidays, such as policemen, firefighters, medical staff. He encourages people to be optimistic and have faith in the future of their country. "Next year we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the birth of our democracy. Our Basic Law turns 75 years old. And for no less than 34 years it has been applied throughout our reunited country. It gives us all reason to celebrate.”

Steinmeier calls on people in Germany not to shy away from challenges: "Let's not throw the blanket over our heads! Let's not waste energy fighting with each other. But have faith in our own strength and experience."/ DW
