The EC criticizes the government's draft law on the public Radio and

The European Commission expressed concerns about the changes in the law on Radio and Television of Montenegro, proposed by the government a few days ago. Brussels noted that the government's proposal was approved without consulting the public and the European Commission. The government's proposal must be approved by the country's parliament.

The EC emphasized that Montenegro should avoid any decision that could threaten the independence of Radio Television of Montenegro, starting with its budget.

"The European Commission notes with concern the proposal of the government of Montenegro, approved without consultation with the public or the Commission, to change the law on the national public broadcaster, which may bring uncertainty in the budget allocations for RTMZ" , said the office of the European Commission .

The Commission emphasizes that media pluralism and independence are the pillars of a democratic society and must be supported.

"To continue with the EU membership process, Montenegro must ensure the independent functioning of public media, including the guarantee of adequate, stable and predictable financial resources, so that RTMZ is able to meet the highest standards high levels of media integrity and responsibility. Therefore, Montenegro should avoid any decision that could threaten the independence of the RTCG, starting with its budget", concludes the statement of the European Commission.

The government's draft law changes the part that refers to the set percentage of 0.3% of GDP for RTMZ and says that the funds for carrying out the basic activity will be provided " depending on macroeconomic parameters and consumption limits".

In Montenegro during 2022, according to media experts and analysts, 19 attacks and threats against journalists and media were registered, and 21 in 2021. During the first four months of 2023, four cases of pressure, threats and attacks were registered verbally to journalists.

Some of the most serious cases, such as the murder of journalist Dushko Jovanovi?, and the violence against Olivera Laki? and Tufik Softi?, have not yet received proper treatment, despite the numerous promises of the authorities, analysts say./ VOA
