Orban: A Trump victory forces Europe to rethink aid to Ukraine

Europe should rethink support for Ukraine if Donald Trump is elected president of the United States, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Sunday, as, according to him, "the continent will not be able to withstand the war itself".

Orban opposes military aid to Ukraine and has made it clear that Trump shares the same views, and would negotiate a peaceful solution for Ukraine.

He supports former President Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, in the race against current Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee.

"We [in Europe] must understand that if we are going to have a pro-peace president in America, and I not only believe, but I am also seeing the numbers in that direction... if what we expect happens and America will be pro -peace, then Europe cannot be pro-war", said Orban. Ukraine will be high on the agenda of European leaders who meet next week in Budapest, he said, referring to the European Political Community and another more informal meeting of EU leaders.

"Europe cannot bear the burden of war alone, and if the Americans return to peace, then we must also adapt, and we will discuss this in Budapest," said Orban.

The election result in the United States is expected to have a major impact on the war in Ukraine and the security of the European continent. Orban has recently angered Brussels because of his close ties to Russia and his objections to aid for Ukraine, which faces a Russian invasion from February 2022.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, said in July that the Hungarian Government sees Trump as an "enabler of peace" in Ukraine.

In July, Orban and his team helped Trump's team on family and immigration policies.

He called Trump on Thursday to wish him luck in the November 5 election./ Rel
