UN expected to vote on resolution on Strait of Hormuz today

The UN Security Council is expected to vote on a resolution addressing the Strait of Hormuz problem this Tuesday.

The vote comes after more than five weeks of war, sparked by US-Israeli attacks on Iran that have driven up oil prices and disrupted traffic through one of the world's most critical energy corridors.

Tehran has restricted passage through the strait, raising concerns over global supply chains and energy markets.

Bahrain, the country holding the rotating presidency of the 15-member UN Security Council, has circulated several draft resolutions in recent days in an attempt to overcome deep divisions among members.

The initial draft, proposed in close coordination with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, as well as Jordan, included language that explicitly cited Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which gives the Security Council the authority to impose measures ranging from sanctions to military action.

The core provision of the latest draft resolution encourages states to coordinate maritime defense actions, including ship escorts, to protect commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz./CNA
