US and Iran accept peace proposal, Trump warns of hell for Strait of Hormuz

Reuters - The United States and Iran agreed on the outline of a plan to end hostilities, but Iran rejected the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, after President Donald Trump threatened to bring "hell" on Tehran if it did not reach a deal by the end of Tuesday.

The peace plan includes a two-tiered approach with an immediate ceasefire followed by a comprehensive agreement to be finalized within 15-20 days, a source told Reuters on Monday.

Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has been in contact with US Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi,

"Iran will not reopen the Strait as part of a temporary ceasefire," a senior Iranian official told Reuters, adding that Iran would not accept deadlines while it considers the proposal.

"Washington lacks the willingness for a permanent ceasefire," the official said.

Axios first reported on Sunday that the US, Iran and regional mediators were discussing a possible 45-day ceasefire as part of a two-phase deal that could lead to a permanent end to the war, citing US, Israeli and regional sources.

TRUMP: DEAL MUST BE ACHIEVED BY TUESDAY

In a harsh-toned post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump threatened further attacks on Iranian energy and transportation infrastructure if Iran failed to make a deal and reopen the Strait by Tuesday.

Later Sunday, the president gave a more precise deadline in a follow-up tweet: "Tuesday, 8:00 PM Eastern Time! (Wednesday 00:00 GMT)"

New airstrikes were reported across the region on Monday, more than five weeks since the US and Israel began striking Iran in a war that has killed thousands of people and damaged economies by driving up oil prices.

Iran responded to the attacks by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, a conduit for about a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas supply, and by attacking Israel, US military bases and energy infrastructure around the Gulf./ CNA
