She released secret information about France/ The journalist is kept in a cell

A French journalist was handcuffed on September 19 by police in connection with a 2021 report of hers alleging that French intelligence had been used by Egypt to kill civilians.

Ariane Lavrilleux was held for 48 hours in a cell and questioned as part of an investigation into compromising national security.

Police forces searched the journalist's apartment, while this event caused outrage in France.

After being released from detention, on Wednesday evening, the journalist thanked the people who had supported her.

"I am free, thank you very much for your support", she wrote on social networks, in three languages, accompanying her status with a fist in front of the Egyptian flag.

Lavrilleux was reportedly questioned by police officers from the French intelligence service - the Directorate General for Internal Security, or DGSI.

Her 2021 report revealed secret documents alleging that Egyptian authorities used French intelligence to bomb and kill smugglers on the Egyptian-Libyan border between 2016 and 2018.

According to the report, French forces were implicated in "at least 19 bombings" against civilians.

The article was published by Disclose, a French investigative journalism website.

Disclose said French authorities under the presidency of President François Hollande and President Emmanuel Macron were "constantly informed" of developments by staff in "several military departments" but that their concerns were ignored.

At the time of publication, Disclose acknowledged that the report contained national security secrets, but said it was sharing them "in the name of a fundamental principle of democracy: the right to information."/ CNA
