A US ship is hit by a Houthi missile in the Gulf of Aden

A US-owned ship was hit by a missile fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels in the Gulf of Aden on Monday, officials said.

The United States Central Command confirmed the attack and blamed Houthi rebels for it.

"The ship has reported that there are no injuries or major damage and is continuing its journey," the Central Command said.

Security firms Ambrey and Dryad Global told The Associated Press (AP) that the vessel struck was the Eagle Gibraltar, a bulk carrier.

The vessel is owned by Eagle Bulk from Connecticut, United States.

Britain's maritime agency, UKMTO, which oversees waters in the Red Sea, said the attack occurred about 177 kilometers east of Aden.

The Houthis have targeted this vital corridor through which goods and energy supplies pass from Asia and the Middle East to the Suez Canal and then to Europe.

Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, say attacks in the vital Red Sea shipping strait are being carried out on ships bound for Israel in response to the war in the Gaza Strip.

British and American forces on Monday attacked military targets of Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels, raising fears of an escalation of the conflict in the Middle East as heavy fighting continues in the Gaza Strip.

On Friday, in the first day of US-led airstrikes, 28 locations and more than 60 targets were hit by missiles and bombs launched by warplanes, warships and submarines. The attacks hit weapons depots, radars and command centers, according to the US.

American forces also carried out airstrikes on Saturday against Houthi rebel radars./ REL
