Law changes in Italy/ Helmets mandatory for skiing on all slopes

The ski season in Italy has opened with a comprehensive new safety rule. Ski helmets are mandatory for everyone on the country's slopes, from skiers and snowboarders to tobogganers and cross-border day trippers.

The new rule, based on the ski helmet law, requires a CE-certified helmet - the "Conformité Européenne" mark that indicates that a product meets EU health, safety and environmental standards, a measure aimed at reducing serious head injuries.

Italy has gradually introduced this requirement in recent years, initially for children under 14, then for those under 18.

This is the first season where the requirement applies to all ages. Violators of the rules could face fines of 200 euros or have their driving licenses suspended for up to three days, and officials say no excuses will be accepted. /CNA
