The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, threatened North Macedonia again, that he will prevent EU membership, in case the new government will continue to call the country Macedonia.

Mitsotakis repeated the call during a meeting before the European elections.

"Our northern neighbors should know that they must fully respect the agreements, if they don't, their European path will remain closed," he said.

According to the Greek Prime Minister, the Prespa agreement is clear and that North Macedonia must respect it.

"I want to once again send a warning to the new government to change its line from now on, to respect the central provision of the Prespa Agreement and to use only the name North Macedonia inside and outside the country. Otherwise, it is certain that they will cause problems not only in bilateral relations but also in Europe's relations with North Macedonia", stressed Mitsotakis.

Greece's warnings come after new President Gordana Silianovska Davkova was sworn in, referring to the country by its old name. Along with Greece, Bulgaria also reacted strongly, saying it does not accept statements and behavior that contradict the agreement on friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation of 2017, as well as other international agreements signed by the Republic of North Macedonia./ CNA
