A new study conducted by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research has shown that unemployment in Germany has reached an all-time high.

According to the study, there are currently more than 630,000 jobs that need to be filled, meaning that Germany needs immigrant workers to help its economy cope with the ongoing shortage, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports

The report issued by the Institute clarifies that the more qualified the job, the more difficult it is to find employees for this position.

The same study revealed that candidates who have completed higher education are mainly in demand and pointed out that the branches of electrical engineering, IT and construction, among others, are currently the most affected by the shortage.

As for jobs in social services, health, education and teaching, the study explains that they too are facing a major shortage of workers. The data shows that if this trend continues, Germany will need around 80,000 teachers by 2030.

Through the study, the authors said that if Germany wants to effectively address its current labor shortage, the country needs to start welcoming more immigrant workers, calling such a move a must.

Commenting on this issue, the director of the Federal Employment Agency, Andrea Nahles, said that the increase in jobs where the employee must make social contributions is almost entirely thanks to immigrants from non-EU countries.
