The G7 pledges a tough and unified stance against Russia

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven, the world's richest democracies, pledged a united front against China's threat to Taiwan and Russian aggression in Ukraine.

At the end of their meetings on Tuesday, they expressed their commitment to strengthen and implement tough sanctions against Moscow. The top diplomats' joint statement also included strong positions on North Korea's unprecedented series of missile tests. But China and Russia took center stage at the three-day meeting hosted by Japan.

"There can be no impunity for war crimes and other atrocities, such as Russia's attacks on civilians and vital civilian infrastructure. We remain committed to intensifying sanctions against Russia, coordinating and fully implementing them," the statement said, adding that the West will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary.

Russia's offensive in Ukraine has largely stalled, and Kiev is preparing for a counteroffensive. Yet there is widespread global concern over the Russian leader's repeated threats to use tactical nuclear weapons.

"Russia's irresponsible nuclear rhetoric and its threat to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus are unacceptable," the ministers said.

The foreign ministers underlined that their meeting in Karuizawa, Japan, marked a turning point in the world's response to Russian and Chinese aggression, two crises seen as challenges to the rules-based international order.

Global efforts to resolve them have been hindered by the positions against China and Russia in the United Nations Security Council.
