Ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) most industrialized nations said they were more united than ever, as they criticized China's increased pressure on Taiwan and Russia's threat to deploy nuclear weapons to Belarus as Moscow continues its war on Ukraine.

"The strength of solidarity among G7 foreign ministers is at a level never seen before," Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said during a press conference after hosting the G7 meeting. in the Japanese city of Karuizawa.

The show of solidarity comes after French President Emmanuel Macron said earlier this month that the European Union looks to reduce its dependence on the United States and be careful not to get involved in the Taiwan crisis.

Beijing sees Taiwan as Chinese territory and has not given up on using force to take control of the self-governing island. The president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, has said that only the people of this island can decide on its future.

In the G7 statement, it was said that the Russian military intervention and the fear of similar actions by China against Taiwan were on the agenda of the three-day meeting.

The group, made up of the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Canada, said Russia's threat to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus was "unacceptable". The G7 said that "any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons in Ukraine will face very serious consequences."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month that Russia would deploy tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus as the NATO military alliance expands toward Russia's borders.

It was the first time since the Cold War ended three decades ago that Russia has suggested it will deploy nuclear forces in another country, raising tensions with the West over Ukraine.

The G7 ministers also agreed that peace and security in the Taiwan Strait are critical and opposed militarization in the South China Sea. They have called on Beijing to act as a responsible member of the international community./ Rel
