The G7 pledges to end plastic pollution by 2040

Environment and Climate Ministers from the group of seven most industrialized countries (G7) have pledged to end plastic pollution in their countries by 2040.

They announced this decision through a statement they released after the meeting they held on Sunday in northern Japan.

"We have pledged to put an end to plastic pollution, with the ambition to reduce this type of pollution to zero by 2040," the statement said.

Germany, France, Canada, Britain and the European Union are already part of a multinational coalition that made this pledge last year.

However, this is the first time that the other countries that are part of the group – Japan, the United States and Italy – have become part of the commitment to zero plastic by 2040.

The German Minister for the Environment, Steffi Lemke, welcomed the G7 commitment, considering it "ambitious".

How is microplastic getting into the food we eat?
The statement said that the pledge will be reached through "promoting sustainable production of plastic, its reuse, and management in nature".

Pollution with plastic products has doubled worldwide in the last 20 years, and only 9 percent of the total amount is successfully recycled.

The United Nations has said that the volume of plastic entering the oceans will nearly triple by 2040./REL
