US Supreme Court President Samuel Alito today temporarily suspended a Texas court ruling that limited access to the abortion pill mifepristone.

Yesterday, the US Department of Homeland Security filed a petition with the Supreme Court to protect access to the abortion pill.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland said the department "will seek urgent help from the Supreme Court to protect the FDA's scientific decision and Americans' access to safe and effective reproductive care."

The drug, called mifepristone, was approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration more than two decades ago. It is used in combination with a second drug, misoprostol. According to the Department of Justice, since its approval, mifepristone has been used by more than 5 million women to safely terminate pregnancies, and today more than half of women who terminate pregnancies rely on it. medicine.

Previous Pill Decisions:

A federal judge in the US state of Texas, appointed by former US President Donald Trump, ordered on April 8 to suspend the approval of the abortion drug mifepristone, which has been used for 23 years.

A judge appointed by former US President Barack Obama in Washington state reversed an hour later, ordering that access to the drug be preserved in 17 states.

The New Orleans-based Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals last week stayed an order by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kaczmarik of Amarillo, Texas, suspending FDA approval of the drug until it hears a lawsuit by an anti-abortion group seeking to stop the pill.
