Russia said on Thursday it would not extend the deadline of the UN-brokered grain deal beyond May 18 unless the West lifts a series of barriers to Russian grain and fertilizer exports.

Ukraine's wheat export deal via the Black Sea was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey in July last year to help ease a global food crisis worsened by the conflict, which is disrupting exports from two of the grain's main suppliers. in the world.

"If there is no progress on solving the five systemic problems... there is no need to talk about further extending the deadline of the Black Sea initiative after May 18," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

"We note that despite strong statements about global food security and aid to countries in need, the Black Sea Initiative served and continues to serve exclusively Kiev's commercial exports in the interests of Western countries," the Russian ministry said.

To persuade Russia to allow Ukraine to resume grain exports via the Black Sea last year, the United Nations agreed through a separate three-year deal in July to help Moscow with its food and fertilizer exports.

Russia said the two agreements were "interrelated parts of a 'package'" and criticized the UN Secretariat for what it called a distortion of the facts.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said "discussions and communications with the parties are continuing" and that UN officials were determined to ensure the implementation of both agreements.

He said of Russia's exports that "there are still many critical issues to be resolved regarding payments and other technical issues" that UN officials were trying to resolve.

But he noted that "there have been some concrete results that have resulted in an increase in the volume of grain trade, a decrease in freight rates and an increase in the number of ships in Russian ports that require chemical fertilizers."

"So we have made some progress, but we keep trying to do more," said Mr. Dujarric./ Voa
