The Kremlin sends the dismissed general to Ukraine in January

The British Ministry of Defense provided an overview of intelligence data on Russian aggression in Ukraine on Sunday. According to the latest information, the British say, it is likely that General Mikhail Teplinsky, commander of the Russian air corps, VDV, has returned to Ukraine in a major role after his dismissal in January.

The ministry described Mr Teplinsky as " perhaps one of the few widely respected senior Russian generals" and that "his troubled career in January suggests intense tensions between factions within the Russian General Staff over Russia's military approach to Ukraine ".

His return means he will "most likely" promote the VDV's traditional role as an elite force, according to the British report, and it is unlikely that his role will be limited to those units.

"During the last few days" , says the British report, "the VDV has resumed a key mission in the battle for Bakhmut and has likely integrated the batteries of thermobaric rockets located in the Kremina sector"

The city of Bakhmut, the main target of the Kremlin's offensive in the east, has been the scene of months of bloody warfare, with fighting intensifying in recent days.

The Ukrainian military announced on Saturday that Ukrainian and Russian forces are waging extremely bloody battles in the city of Bakhmut. Kiev says the Ukrainian military is standing strong in the face of the Kremlin's bloody attacks.

The Russian defense ministry said earlier that fighters from the Wagner mercenary group had captured two more areas of Bakhmut, the main target of Moscow's offensive in eastern Ukraine.

The Wagner mercenary group has led the Kremlin's bid to take Bakhmut since last summer in what has been the longest and deadliest battle of the war for both sides.

With the approved changes, soldiers and reservists will not be able to leave the country without first appearing at a military police station. If they don't show up within 20 days of being notified, they will have their driver's licenses suspended, be barred from selling or buying property, or taking out loans.

According to the Kremlin, since last September, when President Putin ordered nationwide mobilization, more than 300,000 men have been called up to fight in Ukraine.

According to data from "Forbes Russia" magazine, more than 700,000 men have left Russia to escape conscription.

Analysts at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies estimate that at least 200,000 Russian troops have been injured or killed in Ukraine since the Kremlin launched its aggression./ VOA
