Measures for the smooth running of the NATO summit in Ankara/ Turkey arrests

Security forces in Turkey have arrested more than 200 people suspected of links to the extremist group ISIS and other organizations that Turkish authorities consider terrorist, prosecutors announced.

The increased security measures come ahead of the annual NATO summit, which will be held on July 7-8 in Ankara. The meeting is expected to be attended by US President Donald Trump and the leaders of the alliance's 31 other member states.

According to the Ankara Prosecutor's Office, 241 arrest warrants have been issued and 209 people have been detained so far, while police operations continue.

Of those arrested: 56 are suspected members of ISIS AND 35 are suspected members of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C), a communist organization designated a terrorist organization by Turkey and known for previous attacks.

Turkish media also reported on a special operation against DHKP-C, coordinated by prosecutors in Istanbul, where 24 people were arrested in eight provinces of the country.

Turkey has faced violent threats from various radical and dissident groups for years, and the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an regularly carries out extensive security operations. Last month alone, Turkish authorities arrested 324 people suspected of links to ISIS in a nationwide operation.

For the NATO summit, authorities in Ankara have announced strict security measures:

- Ban on protests and public gatherings from June 28 until the end of the summit;
- Restrictions on traffic on roads leading to airports;
- Isolation of areas around the summit venue and hotels where official delegations will stay.

Authorities say these measures are aimed at ensuring the security of world leaders and the smooth running of the NATO summit in the Turkish capital. /CNA
