Encouraging progress in US-Iran talks

The first round of talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland has ended. There appears to have been a convergence of positions. More exchanges are expected, for example on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US and Iran have agreed on a roadmap towards a permanent peace deal. After the first round of negotiations in Switzerland, further expert-level talks are expected throughout the week. The mediating countries, Qatar and Pakistan, stressed that the goal remains to reach a final agreement within 60 days.

The American delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance, while the Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Both sides express a positive balance

The mediating states said the atmosphere of the talks was constructive and spoke of "encouraging progress." Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised Pakistan and Qatar for mediating the talks and also spoke of significant progress.

According to US Vice President Vance, the talks constitute a good basis for a successful agreement to end the war with Iran. "We have not built the house yet, but we have created a strong foundation to achieve a good outcome for the American people," Vance said.

Vance: Nuclear inspections in Iran again

According to Vance, Iran has agreed, among other things, to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to enter the country again. However, no deadline has yet been set for this. Negotiators had tried to contact the inspectors around 2 a.m., but most had not answered the phone. Iran has not yet confirmed the resumption of inspections.

Communication channel for the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon

As the mediating states stated, a communication channel has also been established between the conflicting parties to avoid misunderstandings or incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait is an important route for the world economy for the trade of chemical fertilizers, oil and liquefied gas from the Persian Gulf countries.

In addition, a kind of conflict resolution structure is expected to be established with Lebanon, with the aim of stopping the fighting in the country, the statement said. Fighting is taking place in Lebanon between Israel and the pro-Iranian militia Hezbollah./ DW
