The war in Israel/ How have other countries responded?

World leaders have reacted in different ways to the Hamas attack and Israel's response.

US President Joe Biden says his country's support for Israel is "strong and unwavering". The US has deployed ships and aircraft to the region and said it will send additional munitions to Israel.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged "unwavering support" for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "We will do everything we can to help. Terrorism will not prevail," he said.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Iran supports the Palestinians' right to self-defense and warned that Israel must be held responsible for endangering the region over the years. Hamas is supported by Iran.

In Lebanon, Hezbollah, a powerful armed group also backed by Iran, exchanged artillery and rockets with Israel on Sunday. This has raised fears of a wider conflict between Israel and its rival states.

Official Beijing has called on both sides to "exercise restraint" and "immediately cease fire". State media has reiterated the "two-state solution," which includes the creation of an independent state of Palestine.

Russia's Foreign Ministry called for an "immediate ceasefire" and negotiations towards "a long-awaited, comprehensive and lasting peace"./ CNA
