Arab League chief in Moscow for talks after Hamas attack on Israel

The head of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, on October 8 traveled to Moscow for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov regarding the situation in Gaza after the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, carried out the biggest attacks on Israel in recent years.

Aboul Gheit, who served as foreign minister during the last seven years of Hosni Mubarak's rule, will discuss "the ongoing escalation in the Gaza Strip," an Arab League spokesman said.

After the attack launched by Hamas on Saturday, Russia expressed deep concern calling on the Palestinians and Israel to stop the violence and blamed the West for the situation in the Middle East.

Moscow said genuine negotiations are needed that would enable the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Israel occupied the West Bank during the Six Day War in 1967.

"We deplore the current large-scale escalation and see it as another very dangerous manifestation of the vicious circle of violence that results from the chronic failure to respect United Nations and Security Council resolutions. We regret the blockade that the West is doing to the work in the Middle East", said the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

Earlier in the day, the Palestinian Authority demanded that Arab League foreign ministers meet after the outbreak of violence in Gaza.

Israeli forces have announced that they are continuing clashes with Hamas militants in the south of Israel. Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has warned of a "long war" with Hamas.

As a result of the violence, over 500 people have been killed in Israel and Gaza and thousands more have been injured.

The United States, the United Kingdom, France, the European Union and other countries have expressed support for Israel after the attack by Hamas./ REL
