Sad/ The 6.3 earthquake kills 2,000 people in Afghanistan  

About 2,000 people are suspected to have died after a powerful earthquake hit western Afghanistan, near the Iranian border.

Some estimates put the death toll much higher. The 6.3-magnitude earthquake destroyed at least 12 villages near the city of Herat on Saturday.

There were powerful aftershocks. 

Rescue workers worked through the night trying to find survivors trapped under the rubble.

Thousands of people have been injured.

"We were in our offices and suddenly the building started shaking. The plaster of the walls started falling and the walls cracked, some walls and parts of the building collapsed." Herat resident Bashir Ahmad told AFP news agency.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes - especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range as it lies near the intersection of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

In June last year, Paktika province was hit by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people and left tens of thousands homeless./ CNA
