The alarming reason why you wake up at night to urinate

Waking up at night with the need to urinate is a very common experience, especially for older men.

That doesn't necessarily make it 'normal'.

The culprit is often a common problem called an enlarged prostate.

The prostate is a small walnut-sized gland located below the bladder. Its purpose is to produce fluid to produce sperm.

It tends to get bigger as you get older - which is why more than 30 million men aged 50 and over get up at least once a night to use the bathroom.

Doctor Ted Schaeffer of Northwestern University suggested three ways to get a better night's sleep if you don't want to get up at night to urinate.

1. Don't drink water right before bed
2. Don't drink alcohol before bed
3. Wear knee-high socks
Chaeffer said there may be cause for concern if someone still urinates a lot at night after following his three tips.

It could be due to a hormonal imbalance, or it could be a sign of prostate cancer./ CNA
