The number of victims in Israel has reached 200, while around 1,000 others have been injured.

The surprise attack has so far left 40 people in Israel dead, with hundreds more being treated in hospitals, according to emergency services

Also more than 160 people have been killed in Israeli retaliatory strikes in the Gaza Strip, officials there say according to the BBC.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country "at war" on Saturday after Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a deadly barrage of rockets and sent gunmen into Israeli territory in a major escalation of the long-running conflict between the two sides.

The US has condemned the rocket barrage launched by Palestinian militants against Israel.

"The United States unequivocally condemns the unprovoked attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians," said National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson.

"There is no excuse for terrorism. We stand firmly with the government and people of Israel and express our condolences for the Israeli lives lost in these attacks.

She added that National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has spoken with Israeli national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi and that the US remains "in close contact with our Israeli partners". / CNA
