War with Russia/ About 5 million people displaced inside Ukraine

About five million people in Ukraine have been forced to move from their homes to other parts of the country due to years of Russian attacks, according to official figures.

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereschuk said on Ukrainian state television that 4.9 million people have been registered as internally displaced.

About 3.5 million people have been displaced inside Ukraine since Russia began its full-scale occupation in February 2022, she said.

Before the invasion, more than a million people were internally displaced since 2014 due to ongoing fighting in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.

Russian-led forces had taken control of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions at the time.

There have been no major movements of people recently, Vereshchuk said, adding that some of the displaced had returned to their homes during the August-November period.

This is consistent with developments in the military situation on the ground, where the fronts in the east and south have remained largely unchanged.

According to the latest data of the United Nations, about 6.2 million Ukrainians have fled abroad either temporarily or permanently.
