The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, said that the recent tensions in Kosovo have proven how important the presence of the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, is.

During a press conference in Berlin, together with the Secretary General of the Western military alliance, Scholz said that his country supports the KFOR mission.

"NATO is the guarantor of security in the Western Balkans, in Kosovo through KFOR. Germany participates in this mission through the armed forces. The tensions in the last few days have illustrated how important this presence is and that KFOR must be in a position to react appropriately to all developments", said the German chancellor .

Since the end of May, in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, tensions are high, as the local Serbs oppose the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities.

Due to the increase in tensions, which were followed by violent protests, where dozens of KFOR members were also injured, NATO announced the increase of the military presence in Kosovo.

KFOR, which is the third security responder, has repeatedly stated that it can intervene if necessary, but has encouraged Kosovo and Serbia to resolve their differences through dialogue mediated by the European Union.

On September 24, tensions rose further after an armed group of Serbs attacked the Kosovo Police, killing Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku. During the clashes, authorities said three attackers were also killed.
