The teenager in Uzbekistan insults President Mirziyoev/ He is sentenced to

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison by a regional court in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, accused of insulting the country's president, Shavkat Mirziyoev, on social networks.

Dilshod Iskandarov was accused of insulting the president by commenting on a video of the presidential family - members of which hold influential or lucrative political and business positions in the clan regime - posted on the Instagram social network.

He was sentenced on October 26 for "insulting or slandering the president in public".

Iskandarov is the latest of at least three Uzbeks who have been convicted in the past year under the criminal clause for insulting or defaming the president.

He is said to have deleted the comment on Instagram, after being warned by his relatives about the possible danger.

Mirziyoev won a new seven-year term in unchallenged elections in July.

In August, Mirziyoev appointed his daughter, Saida Mirziyoev, as secretary to the president.

Saida, 38, became the second person in the presidential administration after her father Shavkat Mirziyoev.

Her position as secretary is equal to the position of the head of the administration of the presidency.

The appointment of relatives to influential state positions is common in authoritarian Central Asian countries. In Turkmenistan, President Serdar Berdymukhammedov succeeded his father, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov./ REL
