Of the 14,669 species of plants and animals that are in Europe, included in the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, one fifth of them are in danger of extinction. 

In the study published on Wednesday in the journal Plos One, it is underlined that the biggest threat to the decline of Europe's biodiversity is changes in the use of agricultural land, which is causing wild animals to lose their natural habitat and depleting biological resources.

"We thought it would be good to combine all this data and see what are the main threats, where are the regions where the most threatened species occur, because only if we know the threats, we can do something about it," said the leader of the study, Axel Hochkirch, Head of the Department of Ecology at the National Museum of Natural History in Luxembourg.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List is considered the world's most comprehensive source of data on endangered species. The several thousand species on the Old Continent that are on the Red List account for almost 10 percent of Europe's biodiversity.
