UK's "historic" law: Those born after 2008 will never buy tobacco

The UK appears determined to radically change the smoking situation and is planning to implement one of the strictest anti-smoking measures to date, aiming to create a "cigarette-free generation".

According to the new Tobacco and Electronic Cigarettes Bill, those born after January 1, 2009, will never be able to legally purchase tobacco products.

The regulation, which was passed by parliament and is expected to come into force once it receives royal assent, aims to phase out smoking and allows for tighter controls on nicotine and e-cigarette products. Children up to the age of 17 will face a lifetime ban on buying cigarettes.

The House of Commons and Lords have finalised the text of "landmark" legislation, which aims to prevent those born after January 1, 2009, from taking up smoking by making it illegal to sell tobacco products to them and gradually creating a cigarette-free generation.

The move comes in response to the serious public health impacts of smoking. In England alone, smoking is linked to around 400,000 hospital admissions and 64,000 deaths each year.

Meanwhile, restrictions on the use of electronic cigarettes are also expanding, as it is banned in cars with children, in playgrounds and outside schools. However, it remains allowed in private or open spaces, such as beaches and courtyards. The government says this is a historic reform that will drastically reduce nicotine addiction and ease the pressure on the health system. /CNA
