At least five prisoners have died during riots at a high-security prison in Yare, 70 kilometers south of the Venezuelan capital Caracas.
Conditions in Venezuelan prisons are constantly criticized by non-governmental organizations due to overcrowding, lack of food, violence, gang control, and unsanitary conditions.
"The fight in Yare III prison between persons deprived of their liberty escalated into a riot, resulting in the deaths of five persons deprived of their liberty," the ministry stressed.
Prison authorities did not specify what caused the deaths or the injuries. The prosecutor's office in Caracas limited itself to stating that an investigation has been launched. /CNA
