The leader of Belarus calls on the West to be united against Russia
Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya

The exiled leader of the Democratic Movement of Belarus, Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya, has called on the leaders of the West to be "united" and "determined" to face "Russia's imperialist aims".

Speaking to Radio Free Europe on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington, Tsikhanouskaya argued that the people of Ukraine are not only fighting for their country, but also for "the values ??of democratic countries".

"Believe me, if we allow Ukraine to lose its war, the democratic world - powerful Europe or the US - will be the next to be attacked by the dictatorship," she said.

Tsikhanouskaya, 41, is a former teacher who ran for president in Belarus in 2020 after her husband, Syarhey Tsikhanouski, was barred from running and jailed.

She was forced to flee to Lithuania during the brutal fight against a wave of pro-democracy protests that erupted after leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka was awarded a sixth presidential term in contested elections.

"The destinies of Belarus and Ukraine are intertwined. We fully encourage NATO countries to support the Ukrainians and give Ukraine everything it needs to win this war. But don't leave Belarus aside", she emphasized.

Tsikhanouskaya added that "dictators" like Lukashenka and Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, see the West's indolence and indecision as "weakness".

"And they think they can cross the red lines again and again," she said, adding that they are challenging the Western world to learn how far they can go until they face a response.

"That's why all the tanks and equipment possible for Ukraine had to be there since yesterday. We don't have time", she underlined.

"I am expecting unity and determination from the NATO countries, because this is what the people who are fighting against tyranny, against Russia's imperialist goals, and against the dictators of the world are waiting for," concluded Tsikhanouskaya./ Rel
