EU Commissioner: We are ready to make the acceleration of enlargement a reality

The Commissioner of the European Union for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, said on August 31 that, if the European Council wants, the European Commission is ready to carry out its work to realize the acceleration of EU enlargement.

He made these comments while answering questions about the proposal of the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, that the year 2030 be set as the deadline by which both the European Union and the candidate countries should be ready for expansion.

"In my opinion, if the president of the Council wants to finally commit and take a big step to make the expansion a reality, then this is welcome news," said Varhelyi .

He said that the European Commission is ready to implement any proposal.

"Of course, the [European] Commission has always been ready to make any proposal that would bring us to our goal. I don't think this is a matter of dates, but more of a matter of will and results - results on our part and on the part of our partners in the Western Balkans and the other three candidate countries", he said .

"The [European] Commission is ready to make any proposal and you will see this in October when we would like to present a significant proposal including the growth plan, which the president has already clarified in Bratislava, which would speed up only integration, not only institutional but also real - the real integration of people and the economy in the European Union" , said Varhelyi.

Asked which countries could be the first to join the EU, he said that it would depend on the question of which ones are closer and which ones will make the reforms faster.

"I would encourage them to speed up their work. I think they all have what it takes and we will have everything on the table from October to do that. Let's hope that not only one but all will be interested in this European offer", added Varhelyi.

Two days ago, the spokesperson of the European Commission, Dana Spinat, said that the EC is not focused on deadlines in the process of enlargement of the European Union (EU), but to help the candidate countries to progress in this process. .

Answering questions about the steps that should be taken to speed up enlargement, he said that all decisions, whether small or big, such as decisions on intergovernmental conferences, decisions on financing and decisions on real integrations, should be made before countries to formally join the EU./ REL
