China, Russia and Iran joint naval exercises

The navies of China, Russia and Iran are holding joint exercises this week in the Gulf of Oman, Beijing said on Monday.

The military activities, to be held from Monday to Friday, are aimed at "jointly safeguarding regional maritime security," according to a statement China's defense ministry posted on social media platform WeChat.

"China will send ... the guided-missile destroyer Urumqi, the guided-missile frigate Linyi and the comprehensive supply ship Dongpinghu to participate in the exercise," the statement added, without giving further details.

The exercises in the area were held in March last year between these countries and were called "Security Bond 2023".

This year's round of joint exercises comes at a time of rising tensions in the region, as the war in Gaza continues and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have launched a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

The war in the Gaza Strip began after attacks by Hamas - designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - in southern Israel on October 7, when Palestinian extremists killed nearly 1,200 people and kidnapped nearly 250 others.

Russian state media reported that a detachment of ships from the country's Pacific fleet, led by the cruiser Varyag, arrived in the Iranian port of Chah Bahar on Monday, ahead of the drills.

"The practical part of the exercises will take place in the waters of the Gulf of Oman in the Arabian Sea," Russian news agencies reported, citing the Defense Ministry.

"The main goal of the exercises is to work on the security of maritime economic activity", the ministry is quoted as saying./ REL
