China asks NATO not to create chaos in Asia

China accused NATO on Thursday of seeking security at the expense of others and urged the alliance not to create "chaos" in Asia.

The statement of a spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry was made a day after NATO described China as a state that is enabling Russia's war in Ukraine.

Spokesman Lin Jian, in a press conference, said: "Making China responsible for the Ukraine issue is unreasonable and has evil motives." He said that China has a fair and objective position on the Ukraine issue.

China, unlike the United States and its European allies, has refused to condemn Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Its trade with Russia has increased, at least partially offsetting what has been affected by Western sanctions.

NATO, in a communiqué released during the high-level meeting in Washington, said that China has become an instigator of war through its "borderless partnership" with Russia and its large-scale support for Russia's defense industry.

Mr. Lin said that China's trade with Russia is legitimate and reasonable and based on the rules of the World Trade Organization.

He said that the "so-called security" of NATO is done to the detriment of the security of other countries. China has backed Russia's claim that NATO expansion posed a threat to Moscow.

China has expressed concern about NATO's new relations with countries in the region. Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea sent their leaders or deputies to the NATO meeting being held in Washington.

"China urges NATO to stop interfering in China's domestic politics and tarnishing the country's image and not create chaos in the Asia-Pacific after creating turmoil in Europe," Mr. Lin said.

Chinese troops have been sent to Belarus this week for joint exercises, near the border with NATO member Poland. The exercises are the first with Belarus, Russia's ally.

Mr. Lin described the joint exercise as a normal military exchange and cooperation that is not directed against any specific country./ Voa
